Antonov Mechanical Module (for supercharger and Alternator Drive)
The Antonov Mechanical Module is based on Antonov original patents. The principle is to control the shift with the use of centrifugal force and axial thrust generated by helical gears under load. Therefore, they can work as autonomous self-adapting modules without the need for hydraulic actuation or electronic control.

Lubrication can take place with a small internal pump or using existing oil flows of the driven element.

Possible applications range from optimising an engine supercharger for a car or a boat, to improving car accessories and compressor drive, as well as for transmissions on small recreational vehicles.

The Antonov Mechanical Module is based on one of the first and fundamental inventions of Roumen Antonov. The heart of the device is a self controlling, fully mechanical shift system. It was the principal of balancing shift loads between a speed related load from a centrifugal mechanism and a torque related load from the helical gears. This balance enables smooth, clean shifts to be made across the load and speed range with shifting occurring at higher speeds under higher loads (see diagram).

This concept was initially applied to vehicle transmissions, but the very high demand for shift control did not suit the system characteristics. Work continues to apply the system to ultra low cost and micro cars, but the unit has already found application in areas where a simple two or three speed unit is required. Production is underway for a 2 speed supercharger drive and development work continues on a range of other applications including electric vehicle drives, all terrain vehicles and engine front end and accessory drives.

AAD
Since 1995 Roumen Antonov, together with a small team of engineers, has explored novel planetary automatic transmissions.

By 2002, four generations of innovative concepts had been developed and prototyped in running demonstrator cars of various types. This work enabled AAT to build up essential expertise as well as gain feedback from major OEM’s resulting in a constant evolution from generation to generation.

Created in 2003, the Antonov 6 Speed Automatic Transmission is based on new kinematics and architecture and protected by patents.

For the first time a combination of planetary gears and parallel transfers of power has been created. The engine’s output is transferred to two parallel three-speed modules. Each of these can independently accept power and transfer it to the differential.

In each module, three speeds are produced by two simple planetary gears, two brakes and one clutch. Using the friction elements the transmission can select up-shifts and down-shifts in any combination. Each shift is produced with only two friction elements, one engaging and one disengaging simultaneously. Reverse is also provided in one module.

The transmission is very flexible, it can produce any overall ratio and any steps between any of the speeds. When power is transmitted, only one of the planetary gears is carrying torque. The speed of the two modules is slightly reduced with respect to engine speed. There are two direct drives on 4th and 5th speed, and there are no freewheels in the design offering the potential for higher efficiency.

The start device is one of the wet brakes in one of the modules. This enables easy and effective calibration of launch, with low thermal loading of the friction elements. It also enables the torque converter to be eliminated which reduces cost, weight and size whilst improving efficiency. The system is modular and four, five, six or more speeds versions can be chosen to suit a particular cost and application requirement.
The end result is a compact, lightweight automatic transmission applicable to a wide range of vehicles. This simple design consists of standard components similar to those of current production automatics offering low cost of development and easy new product introduction.

Dual Clutch Automatic and Manual
Dual clutch transmissions have been pioneered by Volkswagen who have demonstrated the benefits of this system. The dual clutch concept uses two input clutches, one of which drives 1st, 3rd and 5th gears and the other 2nd, 4th and 6th gears. The gear is pre-selected using hydraulic actuators to engage conventional synchronisers. The system offers the efficiency of a manual transmission but with all the convenience and driveability of an automatic.

However, the Volkswagen design is relatively large which limits its application to vehicles where there is space (e.g V6 engined vehicles) and is a unique design with few common components to the equivalent manual transmission. The Antonov dual clutch automatic transmission overcomes both of these issues by offering a very short package using a novel gear arrangement and by enabling all rotating components to be common between automatic and single dry clutch manual variant with the exception of the clutch and input shaft assembly.

This offers the investment benefit that much of the product development cost, tooling and assembly point investment is shared between the units making an attractive business case for the units.

The concept can be applied both to the front wheel drive transverse applications where it can be configured for minimum length and also as a seven speed in line transmission where it can offer the possibility of meeting the full ratio range requirements of a light truck within the main transmission, avoiding the need for a 2 speed transfer transmission and further improving the driveline efficiency.
