Example Application Altenator Drive. For air-conditioning at engine idle. Packaged into the crankshaft drive pulley, a 2 speed Antonov mechanical module offers greater efficiency from front end accessories whilst maintaining high alternator current output and effective air-conditioning at engine idle. ===========================================================

Alternator Drive Market Issues *Powertrain front accessory drives have demand that is unrelated to engine speed but output that is speed dependent. *Increasing current demand from alternators at low speed to drive electric power steering driving larger alternator package and higher losses at high engine speeds.
Problem Statement *How to achieve a compact, low cost and highly efficient 2 speed drive in crank nose pulley?
Antonov Solution *Use of a 2 speed module packaged into the crankshaft nose pulley provides a 2:1 step up at lower engine speeds. *No external controls are required. *High transmission efficiency ensures full use of the efficiency gains from lower speed accessory operation at higher engine speeds.
Status *Initial discussions with potential Tier 1 partners underway to refine product specification. *Concept demonstrators planned once trial applications demonstrated. *Introduction time can be shortened by re-use of some elements of supercharger drive to reduce cost and time to produce initial demonstrators. *Expect to achieve Concept Readiness in September 2005

Dual Speed Alternator Antonov are working on high volume application of the 2 speed system to alternators. This enables the alternator to be driven faster at engine idle, ensuring adequate charging from a smaller alternator package. At higher engine speeds the alternator can be run slower, improving efficiency. ===========================================================

Life is getting increasingly difficult for engine accessories such as the alternator. Engine idle speeds are going down and maximum speeds are going up. Electrical load on the vehicle is increasing.
This is leading to the need to fit larger and larger alternators with consequent problems both for their efficiency and packaging them into the engine bay.
Using the Antonov Mechanical Module, Antonov have already shown how a complete dual speed front end drive system can be applied. However this involves changes to the front of the engine and complications in the handing of engine torsional vibration damping. These will be solved, but to get a more rapid route to a product solution, a system that is integrated into the alternator is being developed.
This has the potential for high production volumes but initial work is targeted at vehicles with particular issues, predominantly luxury and military applications.
