===========================================================

Antonov Joint Venture With Loncin For New 6-Speed AT Proceeding to Plan, Cooperation with Geely Ended =================================================
26 January 2008
The new AT150 automatic transmission will first be targeted at domestic China manufacturers, but eventually will be exported. Click to enlarge.Transmission developer Antonov plc says that it is making “considerable progress” in China, with its cooperation with Loncin on developing a small six-speed automatic transmission proceeding according to plan and with financial and other commitments being met on time. In parallel with the technical development work, marketing of the new product is underway. The first product is aimed at 1.3- to 1.6-liter front wheel drive passenger cars, initially targeting the Chinese domestic car makers.
More and more Chinese customers prefer cars with automatic transmissions. At the moment, all automatic transmissions used within our industry are imported. We believe that our engine manufacturing experience in partnership with the unique resources provided by Antonov provide significant opportunities to address a major market for Chinese produced automatic transmissions.
—Tu Jianhua, Loncin’s Chairman
The partnership with Loncin, originally announced in September 2007, was to be Anontov’s second in China. In January 2007, Antonov had signed a Production License Agreement with Zhejiang Geely Automobile Gearbox Co, the transmission manufacturing subsidiary of Geely Automotive. This followed an announcement on 27 November 2006 that Geely and Antonov had signed Heads of Agreement for the license, which is for the production of the Company’s TX6 six-speed automatic transmission. (Earlier post.) However, in November 2007, Antonov’s board announced that the company would not go ahead with its cooperation with Geely. Antonov claimed that Geely had not fulfilled its financial and other obligations agreed upon in the contract. The initial production licence lapsed in September 2007. Loncin is a Chinese manufacturer of motorcycles, small engines and a range of automotive components. It currently manufactures 1.5 million motor cycles per annum and more than 3 million engines both for domestic use and export. It supplies components to domestic and major Western automotive brands. In order to be fully prepared for the joint venture between Antonov and Loncin, an Antonov WOFE (wholly owned foreign enterprise) is being established in China and an additional funding facility of €10 million (US$14.7 million) has been secured to finance Antonov’s contribution to the JV. This is an extension to the €15 million (US$22 million) facility announced on the 9 August 2007 with Quivest, its largest shareholder. Negotiation continues on the details of the joint venture, but under the heads of terms agreed with Loncin, it will be funded by both parties in proportion to the JV shareholding. It is intended that this be close to a 50:50 split but with Loncin having the majority holding. Total initial capitalization is expected to be between €20 million (US$29.3 million) and €30m (US$ 44 million) which will be used to invest in setting up an automatic transmission manufacturing plant in Chong Qing, PRC. The JV will receive a licence for the Antonov patents and Antonov will receive a royalty on each unit sold in addition to any dividend due in respect of its shareholding in the JV. Initial sales will be targeted at Chinese domestic car makers but the intention is to export in the longer term. The initial production capacity is planned at 200,000 units per annum. It is expected that the joint venture will be formed once Antonov has completed its prototype vehicles and Loncin has completed the detailed production planning and costing. These are due to be complete in May 2008. Antonov views the joint venture as a key element in its commercial strategy to maintain direct involvement in the application of its technology. This enables the company to have closer control over its intellectual property rights in order to reduce risk and generate better returns compared with a pure licensing business model, as originally set out with Geely. It sounds like a pretty innovative design. Posted by: sjc | Jan 26, 2008 10:10:57 AM Wasn't it Antonov that sued Toyota over the Prius drivetrain? Posted by: DC | Jan 26, 2008 8:47:19 PM "As of autumn 2005, the Antonov Automotive Technology BV Plc company has sued Toyota, the Lexus brand mother company, over alleged patent infringement relating to key components in the RX 400h's drivetrain and the Toyota Prius hybrid compact car." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_Synergy_Drive

Nieus/News John Moore Business Meeting China April 2008. News at the Antonov site. Click here. ======================================================= Antonov and Loncin could be the first to build a 6-speed automatic transmission in China – further details revealed at Beijing Auto ShowANTONOV-LONCIN
Antonov chief executive John Moore will present a full technical update of its 6-speed automatic transmission - likely to be the first 6-speed automatic to be built in China - at a technical forum being held on 22 April 2008 at the Beijing Auto Show. The title of Moore’s presentation is ‘a new approach to automatic transmission design for the Chinese market’.
“The Beijing Auto Show will be a busy round of meetings with customers interested in our six-speed automatic transmission,” said Moore. “We’re making considerable progress in China and our plan with Loncin to establish a high quality and highly competitive manufacturing capability is evidence of our growing presence and commitment to China. The various conferences surrounding the show provide an excellent opportunity to catch up with industry contacts from around the world.”
To fully prepare for its joint venture with Loncin, Antonov is establishing a wholly owned foreign enterprise at Chong Qing, where the two companies plan to set up their automatic transmission manufacturing plant. Initial sales will be targeted at Chinese domestic car makers, but the intention in the longer term is to export. The initial production capacity is planned at 200,000 units per annum.
Antonov signed an agreement with Loncin in September 2007 to work together to set up their manufacturing joint venture. The joint venture will be formed once Antonov has completed the installation of its transmission system in 1.6-litre mule vehicles and when Loncin has completed detailed production planning and costing. Development vehicles with prototype transmissions have just started running in the UK and the production planning is due to be completed in May 2008.
Antonov and Loncin expect to run customer vehicles from September 2008 onwards with a planned start of production for vehicle programmes commencing mid-2010.
Antonov’s transmission system for the Chinese automotive market offers much quicker and easier integration and calibration than traditional transmissions. It also introduces Chinese carmakers to a home-grown six-speed gearbox offering high mechanical efficiency and world-class shift quality.
Antonov’s six-speed design offers a low entry cost to the application of a full electronically-controlled six-speed gearbox. Six-speed automatic transmissions are much desired by Chinese consumers, but currently have to be imported by carmakers.
The joint venture with Loncin is a key element in Antonov's commercial strategy to maintain direct involvement in the application of its technology. It enables Antonov to have closer control over its intellectual property rights in order to reduce risk and generate better returns compared with a pure licensing business model. The wholly owned foreign enterprise at Chong Qing provides a stronger organisational basis for Antonov’s Chinese activities, supported by a restructured European operation concentrated in a new technical centre at Warwick in the UK.
The Chong Qing enterprise and Warwick technical centre are both helping with the continued commercialisation of Antonov’s patents and intellectual property, which is currently focused on a number of technologies including a low cost four-speed automatic transmission targeted at emerging markets.
Other technologies include a two-speed automatic mechanical module. Initial production is for a dual-speed supercharger with additional applications to engine front-end accessory drives under development. The module is aimed at both aftermarket and high volume original equipment market.
The two-speed self-controlling drive unit is also ideally suited for electric vehicles, which can benefit from a lower start ratio for better acceleration and higher cruise ratio to reduce driveline noise and improve energy efficiency.
“Antonov is a business focussed on automotive innovation and the Chinese market is rapidly becoming the premium market for automotive innovation,” said Moore. “Antonov has a substantial intellectual property portfolio and is actively expanding this wherever commercial opportunities are identified. The technologies we’re commercialising are at different stages of development, but all have high volume potential in the Chinese market.”
