MG Rover/SAIC/NANJING (1 okt 2005).

Patent Office lists SAIC as owner of MG TF rights, reports FT
20th June 2005
James MacIntosh, motor industry editor of the Financial Times, reported on 18 June that the sale of MG Rover assets, for which administrators have asked bidders to pay 10% deposits by 22 June, hit a snag last Friday when it found Patent Office records indicating MG Rover had already sold what was thought to be its main remaining asset - the MG TF sports car - to Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, apparently by accident.
SAIC paid £67m for the rights to most of the Rover range of cars and engines last year, but the MG TF and failed SV ‘super car’ were thought to have been excluded from the deal; however, SAIC was listed as the TF’s owner in last week's update of the Patent Office design register.
A spokesman for the Patent Office said the entry in the register counted as proof of ownership of a design. Any reversal of the transfer would require permission from SAIC, as they are now the legal owners. SAIC refused to comment on its new asset but said it was investigating.
SAIC had not and has still not claimed ownership of rights to the TF, for which it had said there was no market in China. PwC, MG Rover’s administrator, has been trying to sell the rights to and plant for the TF along with the MG brand. Separately, the Qvale company from whose car MG Rover developed the SV reportedly claimed last week it still retained rights to the car.
If the rights to the TF remain in dispute, the issue could affect the already small sums available to MG Rover’s creditors. Companies bidding for assets have been asked to submit final bids in two days’ time and pay a 10 per cent deposit to the administrators – who have not yet commented on the Financial Times report.
The deadline is thought by the FT to be likely to prove difficult for some possible bidders, with Iran, which has expressed interest in buying all of Rover, holding the first round of its presidential election on Friday. Nikolai Smolenski, the Russian millionaire owner of TVR, is said to be awaiting answers from PwC about the sale before going ahead with a bid for the whole business. However, one bidder told the FT he hoped the deadline would speed up the process and lead PwC to name an exclusive bidder. "We are looking to have a change of pace after Wednesday," he said. But another questioned how serious the deadline was: "They can't even tell you exactly what it is they are selling yet," he said.

Powertrain may be SAIC's target among MG Rover assets

Mark Milner
Friday April 22, 2005
The Guardian

The engine-maker Powertrain is Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation's prime target among MG Rover's assets, according to industry sources.
The Chinese carmaker is understood to be among the 200 entities that have made approaches to the administrators, PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Chinese imports of engines and engine parts have more than doubled in the last two years, according to official and industry data, and the government is keen to see more indigenous manufacturing.

Rover's Return?
A saloon car based on the Rover 75 may go into production for the Chinese market late in 2006. The Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), which failed to buy MG Rover this year in a move which immediately preceded the British company's collapse, says it owns the intellectual property rights to the 75, as well as the 25 and ten engine designs, though whether or not this is actually the case may well be the subject of some discussion.
Anyway. SAIC has asked engineering company Ricardo to hire several former MG Rover researchers to work on SAIC projects. The 75 is already being reworked for the Chinese market. The roads in the country are sufficiently rough to require more robust suspension, and engines have to be recalibrated to accept lower-quality fuels. Chinese buyers also prefer large amounts of room in the back, since many of them prefer to be chauffeur-driven. For the same reason, separate DVD systems and air-conditioning for rear-seat passengers are also popular.

The re-manufactured MG Rover Streetwise.

I'll be back! The return of the MG Rover Streetwise.
======================================================

This must seem like a step back in time for Brits who haven't seen an MG Streetwise since 2005. But China's Nanjing is reviving the model, which traces its roots all the way back to the Honda-sourced Rover 200 circa 1995. But in China's car industry -- at least at the moment -- 1995 technology isn't quite past its sell-by date. Car magazine speculates this car could have been built before MG-Rover melted down, and before the tooling was shipped off to Nanjing's own facilities. But the next bunch will likely be China-built. Considering Nanjing still builds a car based on a 1984 Seat, the Streetwise is like a car of the future.
